Title and Author Description
Classic Chinese problem text
Guan Zi Pu

Courtesy of Phil Waldron, who writes:

The Guanzi Pu (Japanese: Kanzufu) is a collection of almost 1500 problems dating back to the seventeenth century. It was first compiled by Guo Bailing and published in 1660, followed by a later edition from Tao Shiyu in 1689. In addition to the usual life-and-death positions, this collection also includes problems where the object is to attack living groups in the most profitable manner.

The problems found in this layout were taken from Ulrich Goertz’s “Classical Go Problems” page, which were in turn downloaded from a Chinese website. The inspiration to typeset these problems came from Czech go player Vit Bruner, who has already taken care of other classical problem collections: the Gokyo Shumyo, Xuanxuan Qijing and the Igo Hatsuyo-ron. The original files of this problem collection included several duplicate positions, which have been removed in here to give a total of 1107 unique problems. These problems are quite difficult, made more so by the absense of answers.

They are, nevertheless, worth studying and will repay the efforts of a diligent student. I hope you enjoy them.

How To Play Against The Stronger Player
Vol. 1 Local Positions

by Sakai Michiharu 8p

Volume 1 treats twenty-five corner/side positions that frequently arise in handicapped games delving into a fair level of detail. The author writes, "In my many years of working with amateur players, one thing I've felt most acutely is their exaggerated fear of the stronger player. They add a move where none is needed, avoid fights they could easily profit from and in general react in fear to shapeless shadows. Based on these observations, I've written this book in the hopes that you can cast off your needless fears of stronger players."

How To Play Against The Stronger Player
Vol. 2 Example Games

by Sakai Michiharu 8p

Volume 2 applies ideas introduced in volume 1. The author writes, "In Volume two, I've examined amateur weaknesses using as source material actual handicap games I've played with students. I'm sure many of these games contain moves not too dissimilar from moves you've played yourself, which should give you a greater appreciation for the lessons they contain."
