The Toronto Open was a well run and most enjoyable tournament. I had the pleasure of meeting two Wingers face to face. None other than Jonathan Buss (5d), who is a local resident, and Danny Dowell (3d), aka schach, who, like moi, also travelled north for the event.

I had the good fortune to win three games against 5-dan level opponents, but was defeated by a 6d and then a 7d opponent. I'm told that the 7d, Beck Jun Ki, was a former national champion, so I wasn't surprised much about the result. All games were interesting and educational.

Wingers who may have the opportunity to travel to Toronto during April, when this yearly tournament is usually held, do consider it. All were welcoming and the Taipei Cultural Center provided a good quality facility for playing. Special thanks to Frank Monks and his assistants for doing a top notch job with organization and execution.

Don't be fooled by an innocent looking face. This friendly young man, Shi Gansheng, was a very tough 5d opponent for me.
